Accenture

What advice would you give to someone at the beginning of their career journey?

When I get to speak to someone who says they want to come and work for Accenture, or perhaps someone who's with us at the start of their journey, the first thing I always ask them is, "What is your ambition? What do you want to be? If you had to think of it today, do you want to be the CEO, the CFO? Do you want to be running sustainability?"

So my advice is always, paint that vision for you. Know where you want to be one day. It doesn't have to be that you're going to end up there - you might find a different path. But start to create that journey in your mind to say, I want to be this.

The perfect job is not going to land itself immediately, but a door is going to open there for you, it might not be in the path you want to go but it's going to open up those connections. It's going to open up that skills development. It's going to open up those different areas that you can start to work in and shine. It's an opportunity to learn and grow.

So what will really help you, and what I would look for, is having that openness to say put me in there, give me a chance, let me see what I can make of it and where I can grow.

What's a common mistake you see people make when they start working?

No matter where you are in the world or what you're doing, people like people. And people like people they like to work with. So you need to realise how you're showing up. Sometimes we as people don't actually see how we're showing up because we don't look in the mirror. We don't ask people, "Am I coming across right? Am I engaging right?" Sometimes we're so stuck in our mindset that we don't actually see how the world is seeing us. So my advice would be to remember to ask for that feedback.
